If my house were a car, it would be totaled.

My house flooded last week while I was in Oregon. A water mane in on the top floor bused (it was a part made of pvc, should've been metal) and ran for somewhere between 1 1/2 to 3 hours. There's about $100,000 - $200,000 in damage to the house. Lucky thing is, the only rooms that were ok were where all of our precious possessions are. Even luckier is that our stuff wouldn't have been covered by the landlord's homeowners insurance... apparently you need renter's insurance for that (and let that be a lesson to all of you).

Some pictures of the damage:

The upstairs bathroom, where it all began:

The ceilings in the kitchen and dining room caved in:

All of the equipment you see on the ground are super-loud fans that had to be running 24 hours a day for about a week.

I didn't ever see the place full of water, but my house mate said that water was pouring out of the light fixture in the dining room (last picture) like a waterfall.

The landlord's daughter (good friend of ours) mentioned it rather casually at the beginning of the year. We should just count ourselves lucky.

I also wish I had pictures of the water cascading down to the first floor. I guess more important things were on my friends' minds when that was happening.

I checked into renters' insurance when I signed a lease. It turned out that I was covered on my parents' insurance only because I was away at school.

WOW though. It is very fortunate that your valuables were alright.
